About Us
The Glen Waverley Secondary College Eco-Committee was formed by a group of middle school students along with teacher and former rain forest activist Mr. David Nicastro in 2007.
We aim to be a democratic forum on environmental sustainability in GWSC, working on projects both within school and also outside of school. Although our name suggests we are a Committee, membership is completely open to anyone in the GWSC community, including teachers – who are considered equal members – and we operate on a democratic consensus decision-making basis , with everyone encouraged to put in their say. This means we are not simply a school administration advisory group. Nor are we a single-issue environmental group.
Although we are primarily concerned with the environment and sustainability, many of us are involved in other activism ranging from anti-whaling and animal rights, to anti-war and pro-choice campaigns. Many of our members are also involved in other groups, including Greenpeace and Socialist Alternative. We recognize that the environmental movement is part of a larger social justice movement of interlinked struggles, and can’t exist as an isolated fight in itself.
The views of the GWSC Eco-Committee membership are diverse, making debate and discussion vital. We’re not “officially” aligned with any particular political movement, but please note that most if not all members identify as left-wing and so the general political direction of the Eco-Committee during and outside of meetings will be left-wing, viewing climate change as systemic and requiring radical change and when possible, always supporting community activism and mass demonstrations. We are not at all an apolitical organization and do not pretend to be one, but we do encourage political debate among members and non-members.
We hold a weekly meeting (information below) where we share views, news and ideas.
Feel free to join in at Room T1, Sci-tech Center in Glen Waverley Secondary College at Period 6 (Common lunch time) every Wednesday.

Purpose of this blog
This blog was set up to provide news about the group, as well news and opinion regarding events related to the environment outside the school. It is also a way for Eco-Committee members to discuss matters among themselves.
